As one of the earliest majors established by Ningbo University, English major is a national specialty, a four-star major, a key major in Zhejiang Province, and a key major in Ningbo, and it is rated as "excellent" by the Ministry of Education in the teaching evaluation of English majors.
The English major aims to cultivate "English professionals with high humanistic qualities, proficient English language skills, solid English language expertise and other related professional knowledge, who are able to work in foreign affairs, education, economy and trade, culture, science and technology, military and other departments in foreign affairs, translation, education, management, research, etc., with proficiency in English and their native languages." The program focuses on cultivating students' solid fundamental knowledge of the English language and proficiency in the use of the English language, systematic knowledge of English literature, a strong ability to appreciate and criticize literature, as well as rich multicultural knowledge and strong intercultural competence. The program consists of three modules: language and literature, translation, and business, with a large and strong teaching team. There are 45 teachers, including 11 professors, 18 associate professors, and 16 lecturers, all of whom have studied abroad.
The curriculum of the English major is designed according to the "platform + module" approach. Specifically, it includes: general education platform courses (36 credits), discipline major courses platform (29.5 credits), core courses platform (42 credits), orientation module courses (44 credits), optional courses (8.5 credits), and hands-on teaching (23 credits). These three modules differ in terms of the orientation module curriculum and the requirements for students to take the orientation module courses. English majors are required to take a minimum of 164 credits, including 112.5 credits of required courses, 47.5 credits of electives, and 4 credits of innovation and entrepreneurship.
